The primary state-owned railway company in Latvia is Latvian Railways. Freight trains operate over the entire current passenger network as well as a number of lines that are currently closed to passenger services. Its daughter companies also transport a significant amount of freight cargo.

The Industrial Heritage Trust runs a narrow-gauge train between Gulbene and Aluksne that makes use of Russian and Polish-built heritage rolling stock. The 33-kilometer route between the two towns is traveled daily by three narrow gauge trains.
