In the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line, the Marshall Islands are an independent island nation and microstate. They are close to the Equator. The nation is located in the larger island group of Micronesia. At the 2018 World Bank Census, 58,413 people lived in the country, which is spread out over five islands and 29 coral atolls with 1,156 individual islands and islets. Majuro is the largest and capital city. With 97.87 percent, it has the most water on its territory of any sovereign state. Wake Island is to the north, Kiribati is to the southeast, Nauru is to the south, and the Federated States of Micronesia is to the west of the islands. Majuro is home to 27,797 Marshall Islanders, or 52.3% of the island's population at the 2011 Census. 73.3 percent of the population was classified as "urban" in 2016. The United Nations also says that there are 760 people per square mile (295 people per km2), and the population is expected to be 59,190 in 2020.
