The road network in Sri Lanka, which is centered on Colombo, the country's commercial capital, serves as the foundation for transportation. A portion of Sri Lanka's transportation requirements are met by a rail network. There are three international airports, harbors, and navigable waterways: in Jaffna, Hambantota, and Katunayake, 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Colombo.
About 93% of Sri Lanka's land transport is handled by roads. A- and B-class roads covered 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) and expressways covered 151.8 kilometers (94.3 miles) in October 2013. In Sri Lanka, buses, motorcycles, and passenger cars (including taxis) are the primary modes of transportation.
