Yemen's unfavorable comparison to its Middle Eastern neighbors in terms of its transportation infrastructure and communications network is directly attributable to the country's poverty. Despite the fact that several projects are planned to improve the system, the roads are generally poor. There isn't a rail system, there haven't been any efforts to improve airport facilities, and only a few people use phones and the Internet. After an attack in 2002, the Port of Aden has shown promising signs of recovery; In 2004 and 2005, container throughput significantly increased. However, decreased throughput may occur in the future as a result of the anticipated increase in shippers' insurance premiums in 2006. The possibility of further development comes with the announcement made in the summer of 2005 that Dubai Ports International would be in charge of the main port facility, Aden Container Terminal, for at least the next 30 years.
